Introduction
Hello BBQ enthusiasts! It's Jake, and today, I’m diving into making beer-can chicken, a favorite for many. After a successful attempt on my Komodo Joe, several followers asked if I could replicate the process on the Yoder. It's been over three and a half years since my last Beer Can Chicken video, so we're definitely overdue for another round.
Choosing the Right Equipment and Ingredients
For this cook, I've opted to use a smoke tube to enhance the flavor with some Bear Mountain Hickory pellets. Although the chicken will take longer than the 40 minutes of smoke the tube provides, the goal is to infuse some smoky goodness into the meat. I'll be cooking at a high temperature of around 425 degrees, which typically leaves little room for smoke flavor due to the clean and intense heat produced by the Yoder at these temperatures.
Prepping the Chicken

This morning, I prepared the chicken by seasoning it thoroughly with a blend that includes a variety of flavors, including garlic, onion, and a hint of orange peel. The chicken was then set up on a can of beer, which will help steam and flavor the chicken from the inside as it cooks.
Lighting the Smoke Tube
Before placing the chicken on the grill, I started the smoke tube. It's crucial to let it burn well for a couple of minutes to ensure it's properly lit and will provide consistent smoke throughout the beginning stages of cooking.
Cooking Process
The chicken was placed in the Yoder, which was preheated to 425 degrees. To add more flavor, I introduced a barbecue sauce during the final stages of cooking, ensuring the skin would end up crispy yet smothered in a delicious sauce. The key to beer can chicken is balancing the cooking time and temperature to achieve a crispy exterior without drying out the meat.
Post-Cook Overview
After cooking, the chicken achieved a perfect balance of smoky flavor, thanks to the initial smoke from the tube and the high cooking temperature, which sealed in the flavors and juices. Topped with a savory barbecue sauce, the final product was visually appealing and deliciously satisfying.
