Introduction

I had the chance to unbox and test the Chef's Temp ProTemp Plus (save 25% with code RUMANDCOOK), their latest entry into the wireless meat thermometer market. Here's what went down:

  • Unboxing Experience: The box contained the thermometer unit, a USB-C charger, temperature probe markers, and some color guides for the probes, which I don't usually use. The device charges via USB-C and has an impressive 80-hour battery life. It also features an output port for charging other devices.

  • Device and Probe Features: The thermometer comes with a zirconium-coated ambient temperature sensor capable of withstanding up to 752°F (400°C). This durability makes it suitable for searing without damage. The device supports additional probes, including a miniature version for smaller cuts of meat.

  • Setting Up: The setup process involved downloading the Chef's Temp app, creating an account, and connecting the device via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The app provides a straightforward interface for selecting the type of meat and the desired doneness.

  • First Cook: I decided to test the thermometer with a dry-brined Angus strip steak, aiming to try out a cold searing technique. The thermometer was easy to insert into the steak, providing both ambient and internal temperature readings. I appreciated the quick temperature reading capability, accurate within ±0.9°F (±0.5°C).

  • Cooking Experience: The cold searing method involved starting with a cold pan and searing the steak for two minutes on each side, gradually building a crust. Although I couldn't take full advantage of the ambient sensor due to cooking indoors, the thermometer accurately tracked the steak's temperature.

  • Observations and Results: The steak reached the target temperature of 130°F, but I encountered some carryover cooking, resulting in a final internal temperature slightly higher than desired. Despite this, the steak turned out well, with an even cook and a good crust.

  • Final Thoughts: My first experience with the Chef's Temp ProTemp Plus was largely positive, though I learned to account for carryover cooking in future uses. The device's robust build, precise temperature readings, and wireless convenience make it a valuable tool for any griller or cook looking to achieve perfect results.

For those interested, I have a discount code, "RUMANDCOOK," for a 25% discount on the Chef'sTemp website. I plan to continue using the thermometer in upcoming cooks and will share a more detailed review in the future.
