Pellet, Gas, Kamado Grill - Pizza Battle

Pizza is basically my second favorite food group, but it’s got to be good! Which grill does it better?

Let me start by saying that I love Kamado grill cooked pizza. It’s right up there with wood fired and it tastes amazing. In fact, if you come to my house to try it, I usually tell people it’s the kind of pizza that required a glass of fine red wine to go with it. I was honest from the opening of the video that I thought the Komodo Kamado might win.

I’ve never made pizza on the Yoder YS640s or the Lynx before. I’ve actually never made pizza on a gas grill period. Since so many people love pizza, I thought a pizza battle would be fun. The results shocked me.

The Setup

  • Yoder YS640s at 550F with a pizza stone in the middle, directly on the racks

  • Lynx gas grill at dome temp of 550F, ceramic plates, pizza stone on top, outside burners on high

  • Komodo Kamado dome temp at 550-600F (went to 600 before I got the pizza on)

  • Pizza stone temps, 440F, 540F, 650F

Results

As you can see from the video, the gas grill and the Komodo Kamado are pretty darn close. The pellet grill pizza did not
rise nearly as much, and was a much denser pizza to chew on. It wasn’t bad, for an at home pizza, but if you had the choice, you would choose the other two for sure.

The shocking thing was that the gas grill pizza had amazing char (outside burners on high and high temps rolling off the dome). Both pizzas looked very close to each other and the taste was so close I couldn’t pick a winner!

I have to say, I was shocked, I never imagined the gas pizza would turn out so great. I think the Komodo Kamado had a slight edge, but it was so closed I couldn’t really call a winner. My wife actually chose the gas grill in a blind taste test.

Honestly, I’m not kicking myself for not trying pizza on my gas grill years ago!
