Pellet, Gas, Kamado Grill - Sear Battle

Part of having a great steak is a sear marks and a tasty crust on the outside. I decided to put the pellet, gas, and kamado up against each other and look at the searing results.

I don’t know about you, but searing a steak is a big piece of a great tasty result. I was originally going to show how the Yoder YS640s sears, but then I decided to do something different. Since I have 3 different types of grills, I decided to put them head to head and look at the results.

Most pellet grills can’t sear

Yoder changed things by allowing you to buy an optional heat diffuser that has a removable door. This allows you to cook directly over the firebox. Add in some grill grates and you have a searing machine. The other two, well we know they sear well!

The Setup

  1. I used the exact same cut of meat. I cut down a full 14 pound loin into steaks.

  2. Salt, Pepper, Garlic on all sides

  3. Reverse seared on the YS640s until temps about 124F.

  4. Crank up the temps on all grills and get to searing

Results

As you can see from the pictures, they are all pretty darn close. Taste wise, I couldn’t tell much of a difference, although the Komodo Kamado came out a head because you could taste some of that charcoal flavor we all love.

Overall though, I think you would be happy with any of them. They all tasted great, and as a steak lover, I personally would have been happy with either of them.
