Steak Battle - Pellet vs. Gas Grill
Common question; Which grill cooks a better steak? Pellet grill or gas grill? Side by side taste test was the only way to get the answer...
I love me some steak. When I was younger, I ate steak 3-4 times a week easily. Whether it is grilled, smoked, marinated, or done on a rotisserie, I can't get enough of it. In more recent years, I cut back on my red meat in general, but I still eat steak usually at least once per week.
Which grill cooks a better steak? Pellet Grill or Gas grill? The only way to answer this one was a side by side taste test.
The Goal
Cook using similar methods and temperatures, using a #steak that was seasoned, and cut in half to ensure a fair test. This was not going to be a scientific test by any means, but I wanted to try and at least make it a fair comparison. This way it could help out those in the market for a new grill asking this very question.
The Set Up
The same piece of steak was used in this test. Seasoned and cut in half:
Steak - 30 day dry aged boneless NY Strip - 22oz roughly
Seasoning - Kosher salt, fresh ground pepper, Worcestershire sauce powder
Cooking method - reverse sear at 300F until 125F (Video went over)
Smoke Flavor - BBQr's Delight Mesquite Pellets (A-MAZE-N smoke tube used on gas)
Rest time - 10-15 minutes
Sear - 2 minutes per side with a 45 degree rotation at the 1 minute mark
Rest time - 5 minutes
Winner?
The pellet grill was the clear winner in this battle.
While the pellet grill won, I have to say that the gas grill steak was a strong contender. They both had a great flavor and I was not disappointed by the gas grill cooked steak at all. They both had a great sear on the outside, but in the end, the wood fired flavor and added smoke taste on the pellet grill steak was enough to make it the clear choice.
